Last week, over on The John Edwards blog I kicked off "The Friday Five" by giving you five reasons to give five dollars and ask five friends to do the same. We raised more than three times our initial goal, which was awesome.
This week we all watched as the President vetoed a bill that supported the troops and provided a plan to bring them home. Now it's up to all of us to make sure that Congress doesn't back down. So this week, I decided to give you 5 reasons why John Edwards is the best candidate for those of us committed to ending the war and bringing our troops home.
Today we're setting our sights higher with a goal of raising $1000, five dollars at a time.
The fun starts below the flip!
(And make sure you check out Tom P's diary too!)
The Friday Five: John Edwards and Iraq
- Plans. John Edwards has a clear vision of how we can bring our troops home and he has laid it out in a detailed and substantive plan that calls on Congress to use its funding power to block President Bush's escalation, immediately begin withdrawing troops by capping funding, and requiring complete withdrawal of all combat troops in about a year.
- Commitment. John is committed to bringing this war to an end and has urged Congress to stand firm in the face of the President's veto of the Iraq funding bill. This week he asked others to join him in calling on Congress to stand up to the President and produced his first campaign ad to send this message. (Check out the original and the first remix below)
- Action. John Edwards knows that we have to end this war by standing together. That's why when MoveOn.org and a coalition of progressive organizations put together emergency veto rallies all over the country, John not only asked all of his supporters to attend, he attended one himself in Portland, Oregon.
- Leadership. As Time magazine reported this week, John Edwards knows that the Bush Administration has used "the global war on terror" to justify political manipulation and fear-mongering - especially when it comes to Iraq. John Edwards' plan for Iraq focuses on results, not rhetoric and frames.
- Responsibility. John Edwards knows our responsibility to our troops continues when they come home. He has a plan for troops who return from war and our veterans that includes access to treatment locations for illnesses, both mental and physical.
